Intent

At Highfield Schools, we want all children to develop a love of reading, writing and spoken language. Strong English skills help children succeed across the curriculum and beyond school.
We introduce pupils to a diverse range of texts that reflect our community and broaden their understanding of the wider world. Through stories, poems and non‑fiction, children build empathy, creativity and confidence in expressing themselves.

Implementation

  • Speaking and listening are prioritised, especially in Reception, to build strong early language foundations.
  • Phonics is taught systematically using Read Write Inc, linking sounds, reading and writing.
  • From Year 2 onwards, VIPERS supports progressive reading comprehension.
  • Juniors who need extra support continue with targeted phonics and matched reading books.
  • Children read widely, write for different purposes and develop secure grammar, spelling and vocabulary.
  • Classrooms are vocabulary‑rich, with high‑quality texts, book corners and shared reading experiences.
  • Adaptations include modelling, sentence stems, visual supports and guided writing.

Impact

By the time children leave Highfield Schools, they will:

  • Read confidently, fluently and for pleasure
  • Write clearly, creatively and accurately for a range of purposes
  • Use rich vocabulary and speak with confidence and clarity
  • Draft, edit and improve their work independently
  • Take pride in their English skills and enjoy using them

Teachers assess learning through daily interactions, reading activities, written work and short assessments. Success is celebrated through displays, author events, reading celebrations and shared storytelling.
