Intent

At Highfield Schools, the Access Art Scheme supports children to become creative, confident and expressive young artists. Through hands‑on exploration, pupils learn how art reflects different cultures, viewpoints and periods in history. As they move into KS2, children refine their skills, develop independence and begin to form their own artistic style.

Implementation

  • Art is taught every term through practical, skills‑based lessons linked to class topics.
  • Children explore drawing, painting, printing, collage, sculpture, digital art and textiles.
  • Progression across the school:
    • EYFS: Exploring materials and early mark‑making
    • Year 1–2: Building control, experimenting with techniques, learning about artists
    • Year 3–4: Strengthening core skills, using sketchbooks and evaluating work
    • Year 5–6: Applying a wide range of techniques, developing personal style and completing more independent projects
  • Pupils learn about a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople, and visiting artists come into school to engage, demonstrate techniques and inspire creativity.
  • Creativity is celebrated through displays, exhibitions and whole‑school art events.
  • Lessons are adapted so all children can participate and succeed.

Impact

By the end of KS1, children:

  • Have secure early art skills
  • Can talk about different artists
  • Feel confident to explore and create

By the end of KS2, children:

  • Use sketchbooks to develop and reflect on ideas
  • Apply a broad range of techniques with increasing independence
  • Use artistic vocabulary to evaluate their own work and others’
  • Understand how art connects to culture, history and society

Teachers assess learning through observation, discussion, sketchbooks and finished work, which are shared through class galleries and school‑wide exhibitions.
