Intent
Forest School gives every child the chance to learn outdoors, build confidence and develop independence. Through hands‑on activities in nature, children learn to manage risks safely, work together and explore the world with curiosity.
Implementation
- Each class from Reception to Year 2 takes part in a four‑week Forest School block every term, delivered by our trained Forest School specialist teacher.
- Sessions are practical, creative and child‑led.
- Progression is clear:
- EYFS: Exploring nature through play and simple routines
- Year 1: Tackling small challenges and working in teams
- Year 2: Applying skills to more complex tasks and taking more responsibility
- Activities may include shelter building, stick characters, potion making, nature identification and seasonal walks.
- Tasks are adapted so all children can take part safely and confidently.
Impact
By the end of Year 2, children:
- Feel confident outdoors
- Work well with others
- Understand how to stay safe in nature
- Show resilience when facing challenges
- Use practical skills with growing independence
Staff observe children during sessions to understand progress and plan next steps. Achievements are celebrated through photos, displays and class discussions.
