BackIntent
At Highfield Schools, we want children to enjoy learning French and develop curiosity about other cultures. Early language learning builds confidence, broadens horizons and lays strong foundations for future study.
Implementation
- French is taught weekly using the Kapow Scheme, with fun, practical activities that build vocabulary, listening and speaking skills.
- Learning begins with simple words and phrases, songs, games and short conversations in KS1.
- In KS2, children build on this foundation through longer conversations, reading and writing simple French, and learning more about French culture.
- Vocabulary is revisited and extended each term so children gradually use more complex language.
- Enrichment includes French songs, games, themed days, French Club and cultural events.
- Activities are adapted so all children can take part confidently.
Impact
By the end of KS1, children will:
- Use simple French words and phrases
- Join in with songs and short conversations
- Show interest in French culture
- Feel confident trying new sounds and vocabulary
By the end of KS2, children will:
- Hold simple conversations and respond with increasing accuracy
- Read and write short phrases and sentences
- Use a wider range of vocabulary and basic grammar
- Understand more about French culture and language patterns
- Feel prepared for further language learning in secondary school
Teachers observe participation, confidence and developing skills. Achievements are celebrated through displays, performances and themed events.
