Phonics
BackIntent
At Highfield, we want every child to become a fluent, confident reader who enjoys books. Strong phonics skills help children read independently, understand new vocabulary and access all areas of learning.
Implementation
- Phonics is taught daily using Read Write Inc (RWI).
- Children learn sounds in a clear sequence, moving from simple to complex.
- Lessons include reading, writing and speaking to build fluency.
- Books are carefully matched to each child’s phonics level.
- Progression:
- Reception: Set 1 / 2 sounds, early blending and writing
- Year 1: Consolidate Set 1 / 2 sounds and Set 3 (complex sounds) and matched reading books
- Year 2: Fluent readers move to VIPERS; others continue RWI
- KS2: Targeted RWI interventions, including Fresh Start
- Adaptations include small groups, extra modelling and visual prompts.
Impact
By the end of their phonics journey, children:
- Read accurately and fluently
- Use phonics independently when reading and writing
- Understand and enjoy what they read
- Are well prepared for KS2 reading
Assessment is ongoing through daily observation, RWI assessments and the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. Success is celebrated through reading achievements, book band progress and class recognition.
