Intent
At Highfield Schools, we want children to become confident, fluent mathematicians who can solve problems, explain their thinking and apply their skills in real‑life situations. Our curriculum builds strong foundations in place value, number facts, times tables and arithmetic, helping children develop essential life skills and enjoyment in maths.
Implementation
- We follow the White Rose Maths curriculum to ensure clear progression and full coverage of all areas.
- Daily lessons include fluency practice, reasoning questions and problem‑solving opportunities.
- Children move through the concrete–pictorial–abstract stages to develop deep understanding.
- Learning builds step by step each year, with regular revisiting of key concepts to strengthen recall.
- Vocabulary such as place value, multiply, divide, fraction, estimate, compare and reason is taught and revisited.
- Children use manipulatives, visual models and high‑quality resources, with enrichment through challenges, investigations and maths clubs.
- Adaptations include practical equipment, scaffolded questions, targeted support and additional challenge where needed.
Impact
By the time they leave Highfield Schools, children:
- Recall number facts quickly and accurately
- Explain their reasoning clearly and show understanding in different ways
- Apply their maths skills to new and unfamiliar problems
- Feel confident, capable and ready for secondary school maths
Teachers assess learning through questioning, short tasks, practice activities and end‑of‑unit assessments. Children’s achievements are celebrated through displays, class sharing and recognition of effort, progress and problem‑solving.
