Intent

At Highfield Schools, we want children to develop strong scientific knowledge and a sense of awe, curiosity and excitement about the world. Through frequent opportunities to explore, question and investigate, children learn how science works and why it matters in everyday life.

Implementation

  • Teachers follow and adapt the Kent Science Scheme to ensure clear National Curriculum coverage.
  • Lessons include hands‑on investigations, practical activities and in‑depth exploration of scientific ideas.
  • Each unit ends with a short quiz to help children apply their knowledge and think like scientists.
  • Learning builds year on year, revisiting key ideas and deepening understanding over time.
  • Vocabulary such as predict, observe, classify, fair test, variable, conclusion, evaporation, force, habitat and materials is taught and revisited.
  • Enrichment includes practical experiments, science clubs, visiting experts and educational trips.
  • Adaptations include visuals, simplified instructions, scaffolded investigations and opportunities to revisit key concepts.

Impact

By the time they leave Highfield Schools, children:

  • Know and remember more scientific knowledge
  • Use a wide range of scientific skills confidently
  • Apply scientific vocabulary accurately
  • Carry out simple investigations and explain their findings
  • Enjoy science and understand its importance in everyday life

Teachers assess learning through discussion, observation, written tasks, quizzes and practical investigations. Children’s achievements are celebrated through displays, class books and sharing work with families.
